If there's something you're passionate about covering, you can try to focus on that. Of course, it also comes down to where you'll be assigned. You may care about something a lot and your editors won't, that happens all the time. Perhaps it's best to be flexible, specialize to the extent that you can but be capable of covering any number of things. You'll learn either way.
Staying broad is a trap. If you don’t specialise, you’re forgettable. That politics desk person has depth because they went all-in. Dabbling makes you replaceable in a field where expertise is everything.
