I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

At Amazon, what is the difference between a Program Manager and Technical Program Manager? It looks like the Technical one gets paid about 25% more but not sure what roles/responsibilities they do differently. Amazon

it's all organizational dependant. some firms value it, other think it's fluff l, some only see value in beautification of content and editing. also b2b v b2c makes a diffdifference with the latter seemingly paying more at times. marketing always struggles with being relevant.
This. In some companies it’s a strategic player, in other companies, it’s more of a dedicated market research role, and in others (probably most others), it’s in title only and you basically do general marketing.
The role where I was most unhappy in my life is when I was a director of product marketing by title but functioned as the marketing director for a product. Great if you want to be that, but terrible if you actually signed up for product marketing and then demand gen, etc., falls on you.
Yeah, many listings don’t reflect the complexity of our jobs in their pay. It’s frustrating because the impact we have on a product’s success is huge, but the salaries don’t always match that responsibility.
I guess it depends on where you’re looking - I spent most of my career in Medtech manufacturing and saw PM/PMM salaries skyrocket - my last last role at that level in 2012 was in NYC and I earned $90k, and I was hiring for the role in 2020 in a mid-Atlantic city paying $135k. I’m now in medical distribution and the similar role only pays around $110k.
Companies set salaries based on the marketplace, not on any concept of strategic impact. If they can get people to accept their offers, those numbers become the market price. The scenario being played out now is indicative of this, there are a lot of people looking for work. Companies can lowball people, as there will always be people who need the job and will accept the offer. This year's job market serves to push salaries downward.
No not at all. I think in general marketing roles are underpaid. With some exceptions at higher level firms, of course
