I was just discussing this topic with a friend. We are both Gen Z, and differences with co-workers from other generations are very noticeable in our hospital. However, different perspectives make our workplace richer.
Im a millennial and notice generational differences working with boomers….
@nhs 1, I completely agree with loyalty and also privilege, which is no longer valued by the newer generations. We go after what helps us to grow professionally while achieving work life balance
I’m an elder millennial and I find that Gen Z’ers have more healthy work life boundaries.
There are good and bad points.
They are able to set boundaries for their personal life, which is great. I love how genZ can be asked to pick up and has no guilt saying "no." It's not something that's found in older generations and I admire it and respect it. I don't push anyone after they say no. I hated it. I'm not putting that on anyone else, and I'm sure they have a reason. Even if it's just because they don't want to.
The bad points are that they lack work ethic and call off at a moment's notice, then complain when they have to work short because their coworkers did the same. They have no problem mouthing off to their supervisors - at any level - can't understand why this is wrong, and don't understand the write up that follows. It can be tough to work with them because they seem to think they can control the narrative during a conversation. As a genX in management , if you come to me and speak your piece , expect me to speak mine. I have been spoken over by more genZ than any other generation, and trust me, boomers can get under my skin too, but al least they listen. I have 2 genZ kids that I have worked very hard to ensure they don't act this way.
I’m a Gen X, I’m shocked at how many 20-25 year olds with no experience come in and want $75,000 plus a year. I can’t be mad, I think my generation came in too low and has had to work their way up slowly but now new younger people are paid equal or even higher than the loyal employees that have been there for years. From what I‘ve seen about 25% of Gen Z can actually justify the higher salary and the other 75% leave and get an equally high salary the next place that they go. I feel that Millennials are just as Tech savvy as Gen Z and both have that over must of us, Gen X. I love a variety of ages and perspectives but I believe loyalty and dependability should not be overlooked or taken advantage of. Young represents fresh ideas and older represents ideas that have been proven over time.

They bring a lot of their personal lives into work and set better boundaries than millenials.

Yes, I’ve worked with Gen Z coworkers. I’ve noticed they value work-life balance, flexibility, and open communication. They’re tech-savvy and challenge traditional norms, which can be refreshing but sometimes clash with established methods. It's been a learning experience on both sides!
MY experience they have no work ethic. They expect others to do all the work and themselves to get the reward. i’m not impressed with them at all and actually just took a new job where I politely asked what the age range of my coworkers would be to make sure I didn’t have to deal with them again. ( Not all are bad, just the ones I’ve dealt with lately.)
They give mental health days I'm a Gen X... I have no idea what a "mental health" day is. We just bucked up and powered through it.
The gen z’s that I work with are lazy and don’t like to work. They are always on their phone playing games or on social media.

I dont think the respect hierarchy. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Yes I notice a lot of sense of entitlement, lack of respect for following procedure, policy, and no sense of holding themselves accountable . They act like a job should understand their personal business with being off on holidays, weekends, and working over time.
They fail to understand a job want employees to do a task with job duties and responsibilities, in exchange for their paychecks.
What millennium and generation Z do best is knowing their worth, not tolerating corporate dysfunction operations, and enjoy a work life balance and make themselves a priority, not the job.
They have a entrepreneur spirit, a natural hustle to make money and have the American dream of luxury cars, resort vacations and home purchases single, divorced and marry before age 30
