McKinsey & Company Anyone here working in cyber at McKinsey or BCG? Would be curious to learn about the work you do and whether you’re hiring/referring. Lots of exposure to c-level staff in planning and implementing a cyber strategy, so would be curious about a jump. McKinsey & Company Boston Consulting Group

Hello People,
I received a verbal offer letter from Oracle. I said yes and things moved on. BGV was initiated as well. BUT, Yesterday I received a call from the hiring manager that Oracle is putting hiring freeze, so they are not able to release offer letter as 1 approval was still pending from the VP. He said I will be contacted once freeze is over. Do you think I still have any chances of getting in once the freeze is lifted and how long the freezes are in Oracle ? Oracle

They call those middle managers and these are the same people companies are letting go and will have a difficult time landing a job in this market. Always good to be a hands on leader that has technical skill sets.
Where in my comment does micro managing come?
The problem isn't you. It is companies using wordsmiths and AI to write job descriptions. Every company thinks they are a household name brand. (They aren't) The job descriptions are loaded with far too many adjectives and superlatives.
Example: R&T, the Northern Hemisphere's globally leading provider is seeking a shaman-level expert in cross-functional manual manipulation of the non-gender specific, subcutaneous homo sapien musculoskeletal interfacing systems while positioned on the x axis in either supine or prone relativity functioning in a low illumination ecosystem enhanced with multi-tonal auditory stimuli produced by pre-recorded electronic means under licensure of appropriate authorities at the state or local level of government oversight. BDSM Degree in Phrenology, astrophysics, machine learning, or GED and 135 years experience preferred.
Just tell me you are looking for a massage therapist!
EXACTLY 💯
What is your passion? Do what you are good at. I think now a days we’re all looking for the world of technology to be our savior so to speak. There is only one savior. I started looking at other options as well. Opening your mind up to other avenues of work keeps you from feeling trapped and worn out with the hunt for tech jobs. Pray and ask God to guide you if there is faith in you. I wish you the best.
Sounds like the management I used to work for.
I'm IC
After 45+ years doing mainframe and PC programming, in everything from Fortran and Cobol to C, C++ and Visual Basic, I'm currently auditing classes at my local community college for the dark side - web programming. I'm taking an HTML/CSS/Javascript course and another for Java programming. I also previously audited courses for electronics, PLCs and digital IC circuits.
Start learning about something new and different that you're interested in. I'm a firm believer that when you stop learning you start dying.
I think you might be taking it too hard on yourself. First, you should try to see yourself realistically and asses your contributions from different perspectives. Then, try to think about what drives you, what you would like to do. And that's your starting point.
I was in the same story, it's actually the story of my career. I always do what I like and enjoy, which sometimes means I need to change either my team or my employer. To me, it sounds like you have a small crisis on your hands and at the moment, you are looking only on the negatives. Acting solely based on those will not solve your underlying cause, I am guessing.
Good luck and all the best.
“Grumpy old neck beard” omg what a great description!
Most times you would have those skills embedded inside due to experience gathered or things learnt across the line, the best approach would be to test yourself by going all out and do things normally you wont be able to do.
Wow, thanks so much everyone for your valuable replies and advice. I appreciate it a LOT💕
Sometimes you just going to jump on and ride that horsey
Spoiler alert: no one knows what they’re doing 😉 we’re all just out here trying to contribute, learn along the way and make decisions we think are helpful. There are days I feel like I am at the peak of my game and others where I feel totally like a fraud. Many of us experience this. A human way to be.
I think the best thing you can do is show up to work in service of others. Help where you can without having to be asked, offer a kudos when someone else does something great. Step in for a colleague if they are going through something. Ask for feedback and see if it can help you narrow a learning opportunity. That will make a tangible difference, I feel.
Yeah. Imposter syndrome. A lot of us have it.
Dig into your work history. What experiences can you recall where you shone? What were the duds? Use feedback you’ve been given, to draw out your skills. It’s good to hear it from others!
You hopfully have instutional knowledge of the "Business Process" and this translates to specifications
I feel like this all the time, but I’ve been a software developer for nearly 28 years. I’ve been upskilling for years and yet the job postings have long lists of requirements that it doesn’t seem like anyone can know everything and each company’s tech stack is different. It’s not enough to just know a language and learn the rest on the job like before. And entry level jobs want years of experience in everything. It’s crazy.
Are you an expat seeking a new job? I have researched this issue, focusing on my acquaintances who are immigrants and expats. Initially, I believed the challenges were primarily related to language barriers or visa issues.
You're fine. Competent people routinely suffer from Imposter Syndrome.
