Looking for a referral to MBB firms - thanks! 🤝
Wow. McKinsey, which has the biggest public sector presence of the MBB, really hasn't been doing too hot at all in the sector.
Its presence is tiny and it's gotten even smaller. Meanwhile it's bungling whatever opportunities it's getting.

Usually it’s just a one level title hit, and doesn’t apply as much to partners with a real book of business. Given that our comp is usually higher this doesn’t involve a pay cut for most. It’s also not about bad habits it’s about not having an internal network which is what you need to be successful
Thank you, P1 for your response.
Bad way of them to put it
But it’s accurate
Most people who lateral into MBB end up taking a title hit
You’ll have to relearn how they do things, why is this so hard to understand?
Thanks LT1!
Looking at this thread like...
😂
LOL wut
Formulated a bit awkwardly but not wrong
Yeah people could word it more tactfully, but it’s meant to set you up for success. Also gives you a little cushion to build your network, get settled socially, and find your people at the firm instead of completely drowning in work.
Cont: that your bring from other firms.’ I want to say ‘My bad habit is leaving my clothes all over...so since we aren’t getting married, I am going to assume you drink way too much kool-aid’.
I wouldn’t use that comeback, it’s not going to land as smoothly as it does in your head...
?
Since you’re at BAH, I’m assuming most of your work has been public sector. There is definitely a learning curve going to strategy from PS that could very well justify a title hit.
I have about 3-4 years financial sector consulting work as well. But I understand that perspective.
Strategy is very different from being a consultant in strategy or program execution. There’s a definite learning curve.
I used to work for BAH. Outside of building network as others mentioned, there is absolutely a difference in expectations of quality. Simply put, MBB charge much much much more than BAH. “Habits” that were acceptable at BAH price point are simply not at MBB. Includes everything from verbal polish to perfection in slides to speed of execution.
And I understand it’s not great to hear (and not most tactful delivery) given your years of experience. But unfortunately you do need to humble yourself and unlearn habits to ensure a great fit.
