Why can’t you have food at your desk??
That is utterly ridiculous! Other than working retail or working in food service when I was in college, I’ve NEVER worked in that bad of a work environment. The music thing is more understandable, but the rod thing is ridiculous (except for heavily scented food like tuna fish sandwiches, microwave popcorn, or egg salad), particularly since so many medical conditions require people to eat more frequently. You’re forcing people to either do without or request a ridiculous accommodation and stand out. There’s no fixing that work situation as that’s a micromanaging environment, so don’t bother suggesting it. Get whatever experience you need if any and get the hell out. This is indicative of their attitude towards you all as adults, and it will only permeate into other areas. Very toxic
Why do you put up with it? Find another firm - you deserve a chill (but still professional) firm.
I literally could not work without music so not sure how you’re doing that. I would definitely look for another work environment
Perhaps an unpopular opinion here, but I can see why an employer wouldn’t want you to have tv on in the background at work. The rest of it sounds terrible
Perhaps lead your victims into your office by placing fake dollar bills leading to your office..ppl will def chat w ya. When they get sent to jail for fraud, you both will laugh about it..
Leave. Life is too short.
I have a split schedule and find that I concentrate way better at home too. If you tell them how it helps you focus better, you might have some luck.
Be the change if you can — chat with people (in the hallway, pop by their office, start with substantive work questions then ask about their life), ask if they want to take a popcorn break with you in the kitchen, bring in headphones so you can listen to music or background noise
What are you getting distracted by if there’s literally nothing else to focus on?
i get SUPER distracted by silence - some people’s brains just work better with some level of background noise. it’s why I work better in coffee shops than libraries - one thing that’s helped me is moving my office next to the kitchen/ water point. would someone who perhaps want to trade who’s bothered by the extra noise? when you’re next to the food people naturally come over and stop to say hi, and I can leave the door open for a low level buzz of noise that I didn’t get when I was in a more isolated spot
