Typically if you are joining a US team, you will make the same as you would in the US and you will likely get an ex pay bonus, at least for the first two years. If you're joining a local team, you might not. They typically pay much less. But the magic circle firms, for example, pay all their associates the Carvath scale, so if you're joining their local team, it won't matter.
And then second what they said above about if you're only on temporary assignment. Your pay should not change but you might get that bonus. But I will say cost of apts might be the same in the major cities but COL is not, so I wouldn't even care if I took a hit!
