I know a lot of very well off people that work at places I’ve never even heard of. Depends on your goals I suppose.
Rising Star
Whichever role you find more interesting. They sound like very different work
If it's pre-IPO, take note of your equity percentage and try to estimate what you could make if the company were acquired or went public. Also consider if you think the company has a realistic chance to have either of those things happen. YMMV with most companies in tech depending on the level of funding, company culture, size of company, etc.
Bigger names in tech will likely pay you more in base salary and give more lucrative stock options that vest after a certain number of years. Can sometimes be referred to as "golden handcuffs"
Financial considerations aside, think about which type of work you find more interesting and make a selection there.
People who I know who work for FAANG springboard into higher titles/better pay at smaller companies. Getting it on your resume does help quite a bit.
hmm I think what's holding me back is that this position at the mid-sized tech firm is a data scientist role.
Data science is a high demand skill regardless of company as long as it's not consulting. I have had relatives easily transition to FAANG in technical roles even though they came from small companies.
if I was interviewing for a non-tech/bizops role though, I would definitely try for the big company. haven't had as much luck with FAANG data science.
As a data scientist, I would go for the DS role. If it’s a true DS role.
