Hi All,
Looking to make the move from working in industry to big4 and was curious as to what level and pay I might be worth?
I have 10 years experience out of uni, as well as completed CPA and MBA. I have a experience in managing entire finance function of small/medium entities, but most notably solid corporate finance experience/strategy leading refinance exercises, debt raising, hedging/treasury strategy etc…Would be looking for something in deal advisory / M&A / CFO advisory etc….thanks Deloitte EY PwC @

You get one extra bad thing hidden by hr per year.

Take that as

Or

You decide
You’re a heartbeat from the presidency.
An extra meeting every week - where you hear the good or bad news, just before the subsequent meeting where the whole rest of the agency is told.
Sounds about right. Also, the whole agency is told a sanitized version.

It’s just a fake promotion. They give you a title but not the money. But you can still show your LinkedIn buddies you’re doing ok and you managed to get noticed in a (big) agency

You get the extra stress and the extra chances of getting fired when shit hits the fan
Looks good on dates, if you are into shallow people like me.
definitely more money.
your consulting friends are impressed with your title.
Not in my experience. I was a VP/Director 7 years ago but I have better PTO and salary now. Also at that job there was a whole slew of XVP’s ahead of me so it meant nothing in terms of decision making ability or authority.
yes, inconsistent. absolutely. some places jt can mean more PTO
You lose all personal time because you are always on call
Not really. But for people who say titles don’t matter, I would argue they often do. And I find it is the more junior creatives and even your account team who are impressed by them. So to me, even though there is nothing tangible associated with it, like money, it comes down to perception and respect. When those presentation decks go out to clients, I think it is noted there as well. So not a huge deal, but there is an unspoken understanding of where you are in the larger scope of things.

Title inflation at agencies is at Weimar levels.
These are called “Working Titles” in HR. What you should be striving for is to get into an Executive “Management Level” which is associated to both your position at the company (I.e how many levels to the top) and a higher Pay Band/Range. I’m an HR strategist and we know which industries are Notorious for giving fake VP titles.
Spoiler: Finance, Marketing/Advertising & Any and All Startups
Pro tip: To know if you’re a “Real” VP or not find out if you have signature authority over your entire company. Otherwise it’s a working title not a management level.
the title has been given out broadly for decades prior that it has been watered down and is fundamentally meaningless. For that matter folks without the title is smaller companies wield more influence and responsibility than folks with the title at large multinationals.
