Does going in house for a couple of years after a 5 year stint in big law eliminate any chances of a return to big law? Say someone would be fine with returning to the same associate class year.

If you are able to go back it almost always comes with a class year cut

like

Thanks! That would be fine.

If you’ve done 5 years at BigLaw and then do a few years in house, you’ll be minimum 8 years out (more if the 5 BigLaw years were not straight out of school). I think it’s time to think more long term about what your goals are. What are you hoping those few years in house will do for you?

like

Serve as a transitional period where my time is up at the current spot, tbh.

like

Definitely not but its hard to go from in house back to big law (billables etc.).

I set up my boss to take on a client that I planned to steal from her. She thought she was using me but I was using her. When she asked me to prepare statements of work, I drafted it with my resume in mind. When she asked me to set pricing, I priced it at my desired salary. When she pawned the work off to me, I nonchalantly took point. Then slowly and surely, I made myself indispensable to the client. I can’t wait to tell her that the foundation’s offer is priced above her salary. Checkmate.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
