Does having a top bank on your resume matter for recruiters? Such as GS, MS, BoA, JPM. I don’t believe the prestigious of a firm should be a threshold indicator but it does seem like a standard

Big names will always matter, that's just the reality of it. People will take jobs at some notable places which may not be great jobs in some ways, but they know it's never going to hurt to have the company name as part of their personal history. One could argue that it shouldn't matter, but there's the opposite case, that getting into a prestige organization says something about you. And there's also the assumption that you learned something working there.

It 1000% matters.

Don't let anybody fool you. None of us in this industry are Albert Enstein or Elon Musk level smart.

One of the main ways to gauge the worth of a person in our industry is by what they've been associated with.

Being associated with "prestigious" organizations translates into more money.

Don’t fret partner. I started at literally one of the worst banks in the country (they got shut down by the OCC). Hopped to a halfway respectable community bank in between, and then got into MS. While working at a prestigious bank makes it easier to find new work, sometimes hiring managers like people who are able to claw their way out of the muck

Think of it as another level of vetting. If you were able to get through the recruitment process at a top bank, then that should say something about the quality of candidate. Of course there are exceptions and this is only one data point, but if you look at the it on average, it should be a good qualifier for the candidate.

like

Yes of course it matters. It means someone else found you credible and did the due diligence on you, minimizing their blind pool risk.

like

Also top institutions are top for a reason, so hopefully the candidate picked up some skills or learned something useful.

like

Goldman and JPM are the only ones that matter on that list.

like

It matters quite a lot

Think of it this way. What are the best indicators on how well a person might perform? The selectivity of your school tells others, you are qualified. Prior work experiences at top 4 meant you went through the grind. Sure, you might have met a few people in those places who might be antisocial or wasn't as qualified as others working in unpopular companies.

I wouldn’t put BofA on that list with those names lol

It matters, but it also depends on "how" you get recruited. If you apply through the official channels, like job posts etc It matters more than if you sent a speculative application. Also it really depends what "prestigious" means. If it means more money, then some banks will do. But you could get a lot of that prestige by working, for example, for a regulator: get less money, but huge prestige. But what if your company does not have prestige? Again, it depends how you get hired. I had interviews lasting 10 min (because of my "heavy" cv) and interviews where they asked me a ton of questions regardless of my cv. You need to know how the recruiting channel you are using works; then get ready to tell an interesting story about yourself, which is not just boasting this or that result, but it is about self improvement, problem solving, conflict solving etc. If you are good at these and can showcase them...you are ready for anything.

Bofa should be in the list! Its didn’t fail like Goldman or MS during the crisis. They got injections from Buffet and MUFG, respectively. Let’s not forget!

I'm going to say no. I worked at Navy Federal, a fortune 100 company and the largest credit union in the world, held multiple positions, and it did nothing for me.

It certainly helps. However, it's also very important to be able to show that you learned during your time there. Mentors are very important in helping shape your future. If I had to choose between working for the top institution but not have a strong mentor, or working for the second or third place institution with people who are really interested in the value I can bring and how they can help me grow, I would choose the latter.
