There’s no right or wrong decision that applies across the board. There is inherent risk in everything and the grass is always going to look greener on the other side. I have known of people who have worked at the same agency for over 20 years and then when they get laid off, they are totally helpless and unprepared because they were so spoiled. However, that 20 year stability definitely is also something most people wish they could have.
A lot depends on your personality. Are you restless? Are you bored? Do you see opportunities to keep moving up in the place where you’re at, if that’s what you want? And if not, do you see that place keeping you for a long time without being pressured to take on more responsibilities?
Working in different places is a pain in the ass and always dangerous because the new place could turn out to be worse than your previous job. But at the same time, you learn to be adaptable, flexible and learn different ways of approaching a problem. Also your network gets bigger.
Staying in one place for a long time is comfortable and could be safe. Nothing wrong with that, especially in this market. However, it can stifle your creativity and limit your perspective. Changing shops every so often is usually the rule, but most of us don’t stay long because we get laid off before we have a choice. 🤷🏻♂️
I dont see the issue as long as your salary is commensurate to your experience. In fact, its kinda the dream to keep making stuff without taking on more managerial responsibilties. Lots of creatives who are good end up being promoted, then hate that they cant just keep creating without dealing with the political bs.
So, if youre creating, learning, are happy, and financially sustained- why not.
