I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Nobody talks about things like this at work anymore because they don’t want to get fired or have their coworkers turn on them because of their political beliefs. If you say the wrong thing at work, things can get really bad for you really quickly, especially if you’re in an office with a bunch of people on the opposite end of the political spectrum from you.
I know why, I’m just wondering how relatable this is/is not to others - and in what capacity.
Tbh, after the lip service from many companies during all the chaos of 2020, I think I'd prefer silence from most of them.
💯. In fact, sometimes *inaction* speaks volumes.

Nobody talks about it for fear of consequence. When our own governments dont address issues, our employers wont either.
I don’t watch mainstream news, so no heaviness here. Perks of opting out of the doom machine is a blissful daily life.
I am privileged and I’ll never feel shame in that. My immigrant family gave me resilience and gratitude. If you’d rather wallow than choose joy, that’s a choice...but it’s not mine. 🌏✌️☮️💫🌞💖
i try to create a space for people to talk but honestly - when i try to initiate any sort of conversation about what's going on in the world everyone seems a bit paniced. We recently hired a russian girl and I thought it would be interesting to hear and learn more about how russia sees the west but she doesn't seem to want to go anywhere the topic or indeed anything at all related. I suspect she's had a life of being "russian" and whatever that might entail and just not want to be involved at all.
I do personally find it very strange and unsettling. Like all of these shifts are happening day to day and everyone shows up so chipper and ready to sell, sell, SELL! It's like I'm in this awkward, fake bubble at work.
And because there's no acknowledgment of how the sociopolitical happenings are likely impacting consumer behavior, no one is pointing out the obvious factors that are leading to downturns in profit (i.e. inflation, recession looming, people losing their livelihoods at the hands of the new government and/or radicalized leftists & rightists, etc.)!!! It's like the unsaid secret or whatever that saying is.
It feels like insanity.
Actually to the commenter above, I DON'T watch tv, nor do I read the news. Not in 2025. My outlook is fairly positive because of that. Perhaps don't jump to such black and white assumptions on the web.
That said, for the little I do hear about this year, it is still quite strange how the expectation is to just keep pushing BAU, when clearly there are very real environmental factors creating a downturn for clients. There's only so much optimization that can be done when consumers are just not willing to spend money for very obvious reasons.
Yes!
Working in social, it's a double dose of pain. Everything feels pointless work wise, and I can't escape the news even if I wanted to (I don't, but I'd like to be able to choose when im exposed to the latest step towards civil war)
Not the news echo chamber, it'd be easier to dismiss if it was MSM.
