I do keto because the goal I’m oriented towards is losing fat, so I don’t care so much about hitting new maxes in the gym. The gym is just another place to get my body to burn fat. If I cared more about performance, I’d do paleo or something else that wasn’t as carb-constricting. You can’t put low octane fuel in a race car and expect to compete.
In the beginning, it will be extremely difficult while your body transitions into ketosis and looks for fat as fuel vs carbs/sugar. Eventually, you will adapt, but unfortunately it won’t be at the same capacity/performance level as when you weren’t on Keto. One of the downsides of Keto and being performance goal oriented in the gym/track etc. Does that mean your times will never hit a new PR? No, but you’ll have to work and push yourself harder. IMHO it’s worth it.
Yes, you do get adapted. For a kick of energy, I used to eat some coconut shreds (MCT also works) a few hours beforehand. Also seconding SC1 — make sure you get enough protein, because there is a required number of grams (not just x% of calories).
You get adapted (mentally, and physically to an extent) but you have to realize that with empty glycogen storages your body has a lot
less readily available energy to utilize. So you definitely will be a little slower/weaker. Endurance wise, you’ll adjust as you continue to workout consistently (and push yourself endurance wise)
Increase your protein if your pushing hard. If not you’ll be destroying muscle
2nd was sys admin said - I’ve hit plenty of PRs on Keto, but it most likely would have been faster with carbs in me
Nope.
So- how long does it take to adapt?
