Does work life balance exist as a lawyer? For whose who have achieved it, how do you do it? I know lawyers doing 40 hours per week and still working weekends.

This comment section is kind of bleak. What’s wrong with wanting WLB during the years of your life when you need balance the most? The partners saying you have to earn it… they are why WLB does not exist at a lot of firms. 🥲

like

Yes, it does. But you have to earn it. Forget about ever working a 9 to 5 schedule, especially for the first few years. If you want to be good at this, you’re going to have to suffer.

There are no shortcuts. But, after a few years, when you finally start to get on top of the substance and the workload and the stress levels, then you will feel a balance start to develop.

A2, tough to say. For me it was around the 5-6 year mark that I started to feel more in control. But there are also a personal responsibility/boundaries and “assimilation”elements to this.

As to boundaries, in this world you get what you’re willing to take. Only you know where you need to draw the line on your workload in order to stay sane. Build healthy routines to the extent you can and stick to them. Plan vacations well in advance and stick to those too. If you’re unavailable, then you’re unavailable. Colleagues will generally respect that.

As to assimilation (for lack of a better term), I allowed my colleagues and professional community to also become my social community. For many, conferences and seminars are time with friends. (I also happen to be part of a bar that knows how to make conferences fun.). Once everything blends together, it feels more balanced.

Depends on the area of practice and culture of the firm. I do patent prosecution fully remotely and usually work 8–4 and I do more than that it’s because I took time off during the day to do other stuff and need to make up for it.

I have good WLB but I probably make a lot less than a lot of other attorneys, so there’s a trade off there.

16 years in, yes it exists. But I earned it.

Traditional and bigger law firms? I think the comments here speak for themselves. Work life balance will exist after your divorced, your kids are grown and work life balance means sitting alone in a big house with only your thoughts to keep you company

If you go with a smaller law firm that has the right culture, it definitely exists. Its also possible to make good money and be home at a decent time. Im making as much as my classmates at much larger firms and the shareholders proactively make sure my workload will allow me to coach my kids sports and get home at a decent hour. It all depends on the firm you are with.

Patent prosecution and maritime law pay extremely well, are usually remote, and tend to work on a 9 to 5 schedule. The type of law determines the lifestyle balance.

like

It does. Just be disciplined about time management and block off and respect your personal time. As you become senior, build your team and delegate accordingly.

I’m in Big Law and it does not for us. We get paid a lot and the expectation is you are available in return. If that doesn’t work for you, don’t do Big Law

funny

I’m in Big Law and have work life balance. Sure, I work evenings or weekends—it’s a service industry. That said, my partners and clients are generally respectful of my time outside M-F from 8-7 absent an urgent business or legal request.

If you want to make the money you have to work the hours.

If you want to only work 40 hours a week, get a job that has you clock in and out

Are you the same person who asked why big law firms “discriminate” against small law applicants? If you’re the same person then I can see why.

Hi I was interviewed by Capgemini in December 2021 and surprisingly they called in February 2022 for second round.

1. When can i expect call from hr?
2. I was thinking it is not genuine as they did not had clarity for which they were interviewing me. However in both round people who interviewed had email id with domain of Capgemini.

Did it happened with anybody else?

Please guide.
Thanks

I’m in my 4th year at a small plaintiffs’ firm. Past two years I’ve received meager raises (5k) and terrible bonuses (3k). My boss prides himself on allowing me to gain experience so I have more courtroom experience than most attorneys with twice the experience. As I’ve applied for other firms, I’ve been denied interviews based on how my boss is perceived in the community. I’ve gathered professional references from opposing attorneys and other attorneys we work with but still can’t land. Help

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. In contrast, my legal argument section is generally without edits. For context, first defense lit job post appellate clerkship. Is this normal?? Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?
