Does your firm have a formalized FP&A function? I’m a Senior Manager in our corporate strategy department (not client-facing) and I’ve been asked by our executive team/Board to stand this up. While I do have minimal experience doing this as part of my role, I feel like this should be its own function within Finance, not a side hustle. Especially at a $1B+ company.

Sounds like good experience to justify a team buildout under yourself, if you are interested.

$1B+ top line should have at least a few dedicated FP&A resources.

We have 10 at $1B+. I also had 30+ at $4B and 5 at $300MM public company (VP, Sr Director, Director, Lead, Analyst).

Depends on complexity of business, fragmentation, and scope of work.

These roles also spanned headcount planning, capital expenditures, investor relations, M&A at smaller companies and at larger firms was pure play FP&A / operational finance.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

I know there is no black & white answer, but what’s your thought process in deciding when to sell and keep the profit?

I’m not bad with money but definitely lots of room to improve overall, due to several personal factors I don’t want to list in full here (numerous unanticipated medical bills, bad boyfriends, etc.) Hence why I only have $3k in savings right now. My first mini goal is to have $5k saved by the end of December. I need motivation and words of encouragement. If I pay off my medical bills, I won’t make my goal. I have to start putting saving money first. Getting depressed about my situation.

Need advice: do you tell your manager that you’re unhappy or do you just leave?

I’m being taken advantage of with being thrown so much work and really don’t see my salary increasing to be in line with my coworkers doing similar work. I’m a consistent high performer - management reviews tell me that much.

My coworker did mention to the manager that they’re not being paid well for the work they do, and our manager took it personally and told them they’re ungrateful 🥲
