This could be interesting, $90 is in the middle of you range, so you should be happy. If you want to counter, go $95.
Do they offer a bonus? Good 401k match? Equity? Other perks? If they don’t offer a bonus or other good perks, I guess you could say that you envisioned other aspects would be included in the offer, which is why you gave the range of 85-95, but since they’re not included (and I’m making up a story here), you want to revisit the salary request
I like the idea of blaming the lack of stock options as the reason you need $100
Go for 100k
The job?
could someone share their experience with negotiations? I have a verbal offer and nothing in writing yet so I expect to hear an official salary soon. I would be kinda nervous asking for more money
Yeah I was recently interviewing for a couple positions. For one I said that I’m expecting $75k based on next promo, so would hope to make at least that to consider leaving. I’m don’t think entitled to bonuses, and not sure about matches. But I set my baseline and they would’ve countered it down most likely. This is cozy industry accounting with great work life balance, so definitely a bit more structure and less room to negotiate there..but have them give their number first.
I came across that tip, and had been working with a different recruiter at the time who I had also told $75k base. I told her I felt that was shortsighted of me, and I should’ve asked what they typically pay for these roles. I ended up pushing for $80k as a minimum for and investment management accounting opportunity. That job came with 15% bonus and 4.4% contribution on-top of of base and bonus, so my total comp would’ve jumped from low $60’s to $96k which was insane.
If you ask for their number first - you can’t leave any money on the table.
update: I countered 97K and requested to work remotely from a different country for 1 month (still working in US time). They said they couldn’t do that salary and accommodate working abroad so they rescinded the offer. lol
It was probably the remote work from another country that sunk you, not the money.
That doesn't necessarily make them a bad place to work for. There's a whole host of issues with having employee work abroad. Some local or even regional player can't operate with that kind of risk.
When you said 95 wasn’t your expectation that they would counter with something less?
Go for a more targeted number like $97,500. Makes it seem as though you've done thorough analysis of your market worth and not just targeting the 6 figure mark.
Always ask for more before you start. Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate
When they ask why More money?
someone interacted with this post and gave me a notification so here’s another update nobody asked for: got an offer at $114k base, plus RSU and annual bonus target 12%. and the 401k match is 1:1 up to $15k 😂 in the end i had to stay in the same city instead of moving 6 hours away but this job is much better

Was the offer verbal or written? If it's written, I assume that there are no other comp. If that's the case, go with 100k. Industry usually offers 5 to 10% bonus and other comps like stock options. It won't hurt to ask.

Is it a private company? No annual bonus and no stock options, no 401k matches... Did you know how much you have to contribute for insurance plan? Put everything in a spreadsheet and calculate all factors. If you ended up paying a lot for insurance, it is not worth of pursuing IMHO.
I’ve read to always counter 10% higher than you initial offer, which your $100k is in line with. I just went through this process my initial number was the top of the range I gave in my phone screening. I came back and countered at 10% more after taking about a week to think about it and they accepted within an hour. Only caveat they had was that I won’t eligible for a bonus or comp cycle adjustment this summer.
