Ugh I hear you. Transitioning from the military to civilian roles can be tough, but your skills are valuable. Have you connected with veteran hiring programs or mentorship groups? I assume you're leveraging your network already, but that's gonna be huge in landing something too. I'd rely heavily on your network AND try to make connections with new people as well
Yes I am on linked in, I got with the veterans outreach group here in my city, I worked heavily on my resume and send it to friends and mentors.. I had two job interviews with the same company I received positive feedback after my phone interview and my Zoom interview, the regional hiring manager via zoom told me I would be receiving a interview from the local hiring manager early this week.. she told me if I didn’t hear from the hiring manager to email her so she could email a reminder to the local hiring manager.. I did that on Tuesday and now the regional manager has went ghost 💀 very unprofessional
I'm still in the service but I've seen more than few posts from managers and hiring personnel who say the complete opposite from your reflection and posit the question to veterans about how since they served they feel entitled whereas their skills were not transferable and they prefer civilians over military. Personally I feel there are some fields where our skills directly translate to the employer and others where it'll take time to bridge gaps. Some love us and others hate us it seems. Still better now for us though regardless I assume.
I feel ya. Employers need to take interest and be educated as to how valuable we are and what real world skills we bring to the table.
Yeah.. struggle continues and I’ll keep applying
It is a pretty lousy job market lately, so keep that in mind. For a while it's been an employer's market, so recruiters often just don't feel like they have to be all that courteous or polite. I'd been hoping that things would pick up in the new year, but so far this year feels like it'll be chaotic and have some economic uncertainty. That's the last thing we all need.
Yeah, with all the recently fired federal employees that’s going to add to the burden of finding a job.. I applied to go back to school
I hear you, I'm in the same boat, not only am I a veteran I also have several years of experience as a security officer and as a Captain
Yeah, I have qualifications and experience in a specialized field within the medical field and they don’t seem to care
I can understand how that transition of mindsets is difficult, In my experience it’s not “do these skills transfer,” but how can you explain in an interview or resume how your skills will make them money.
We are also introduced to leadership roles far earlier than most. If you’re only willing to accept leadership role jobs with experience in their organization, that can be a risk.
Take some time to learn how discuss your soft skills and different business IT platforms that are familiar with the job field youre applying to.
More than willing to help if you want to reach out.
My name is Clay Drew, DM me on socials (linkedin or FB). If nothing else we can take a look at what youre working with.
Right now I think that jobs are just really hard to find because the job market sucks. I know several people with tons of experience who are also having trouble finding a new role. I would suggest posting in the job referral bowl to see if youc an get any roles in there.
Thanks will do !
I am in the same path. Transitioning from military to civilian is hard and honestly never gets easier. Been out since 2011, started my own business in 2013 and closed 2023 due to surgery on service related injuries. Fighting the VA for my 100% and just got canned from my remote job for "performance issues" when I made top tier incentive every month. It was because I have so many appointments. Indeed is a great place but just know that in my experience companies only care about padding their pockets. If you can build your own business that I the way to go. I was doing so good until I had to close down. Now we struggle to make it month to month with the job and now that I am on unemployment it's going to be really hard. The issue I had was none of my military training transfered to civilian life. No ASE certifications, no CDL for all the trucks and equipment I was licensed for, no degree for the security work I did, and no certification for being an MP for a small stint. I would have to completey go through any training program again to get any of the "certifications" needed. This stuff needs to change for us veterans. It sucks being a leader and being top tier in your skill set only to have to start all over when your out. It's another reason for such high mental health issues in the veteran community. I wish you luck.
Man.. That’s extremely unfortunate man.. extremely
I think you should ask yourself honestly if your experience in the military actually translates into the career you’re seeking in the civilian world. I’m a vet myself and I met lots of guys that couldn’t really do the job they had. Just being a veteran doesn’t necessarily make you qualified.
