Managing an actual product and doing impactful work vs "strategizing" your client by using decks and frameworks.
You choose
It’s google. It’s the best place to work in the history of the humankind. Just go. Consulting will gladly take you back in a few years if you miss being miserable.
If you get homesick, call Marriott and listen to the automated voice tell you how many points you have left
Now go eat sushi, get laundry done and see your kid at onsite daycare during your lunch break. Jeez. Can’t believe this is a question.
@OP - Sr. PM is not L6. I’d be surprised if your recruiter shared your level with you. If you find yourself unable to negotiate to 400k, you probably have an L5 offer
McK 1 - I am up for promotion to manager but even for M1 at pwc, I will be at ~160. Comp is not comparable for sure. I just can’t decide it I want to work for 7-8 years at relatively lower comp and shoot for partner or just start making more money now and eventually move into a director role at a tech company, google maybe.
D3 - Applied through a Googler referral. 2 phone interviews on hangout, one was more around backgroun, pwc, prior PM experience etc and 2nd was a case interview over hangouts which was new to me. Case was very relevant to google’s global expansion. Then on-sites. Case, technical, behavioral.
OP- So excited for your career!! Just go already!!!
Now I'm wondering why I'm here...and questioning how much I get paid...
@M1: I live in a place that isn’t SF or NYC. L6 or L7 is probably my last promo before I’m asked to relocate, though. At L7 PM, you’re looking at money that makes even Palo Alto palatable
Google 1 - Product Manager
I’m out of the loop... what does L5/L6 mean in this context?
This is an awesome opportunity. I find PM work to be strategic too
M2 - 600-700 for Strategy& perhaps. I know several 1-3 year PwC Advisory partners (friends) who make <$450k.
Take it and run
@PwC1: Vesting begins after a trial period that can be negotiated. Longest I’ve ever heard is a year, shortest is a month after one starts. Vesting schedule depends on how much money OP negotiates, but tldr you can totally count on that money.
Stocks are refreshed once a year based on perf., so if one gets promoted before the original 4-year grant runs out, TC should never drop
This isn’t even close. You could come back in four years at Director with the options vested.
I have seen many similar exits. What are we all doing in consulting still? OP is not even a manager yet and is going to make 300k+ at Google. Well done, happy for you!
Congrats OP!
How do you calculate the total comp at 300k?
I am always amazed how you can leave consulting for tech and double your salary. Offer looks fine. You can probably get a bit more equity. Much harder to reach $300k in consulting. Hard to think of downsides
Oo - Where are you based now? Are you relocating?
Big congrats! Can you share how technical interview part looks like? How realistic is it for a non-engineering background candidate but with exposure in product development and operations?
Op. I need closure. So, did you take it? Why or why not? If so, how is it?
