Managing an actual product and doing impactful work vs "strategizing" your client by using decks and frameworks.

It’s google. It’s the best place to work in the history of the humankind. Just go. Consulting will gladly take you back in a few years if you miss being miserable.
If you get homesick, call Marriott and listen to the automated voice tell you how many points you have left
Now go eat sushi, get laundry done and see your kid at onsite daycare during your lunch break. Jeez. Can’t believe this is a question.
So you’re a 3rd SA at Pdubs maybe up for Manager and contemplating turning down $300k pa at Google.... !!!!!!?????!!!
By PM, do you mean product manager or program manager?
Also, congrats on the role + humblebrag
Go in on this offer. It is a godsend to receive out of Big 4 Consulting. Please don’t lose this opportunity
@D2 - yes, every time google makes an enterprise architecture decision, we call in all the consulting firms to make sure it aligns with their business
Salary looks good, but there’s more room to negotiate on equity. TC should be 350-400k for L6. Suggest getting a competing offer to increase leverage.
Source: I am a L5 PM up for promo this cycle
Unless you’re planning to make partner, this is a no brainer. Unless you’re an SA making 100k plus in Iowa where you can buy a house for 7 dollars
^^ are there easier ways to make partner money and NOT have to move to the freakin Bay Area?
Congratulations! what kind of work are you doing as a Sr. PM? Would love to make a similar move one day.
@G1 none of the consulting firms discuss enterprise architecture with each other either yet their levels are easily paralleled. Not sure why you feel compelled to give a sarcastic response
Typical Google behavior.
Also, to add to this, I have prior experience as a PM and hold a MSEE and an MBA. Offer seems very attractive as I make half of that in total comp at pwc but it’s hard to let go of a "strategic” role
As McK pointed out, there are basically no downsides. Maybe promotion frequency, but the band for L5 overlaps with L6, and same with L6/L7. 5 years between promotions doesn’t necessarily mean less money. I’ve given a couple threads on my transition & the perks that came with it — search “Google” under companies to surface those. You could always go back to consulting, but there are easier ways to make partner money
I’m a Googler (came from MBB) and I can say, right now, that Google is an amazingly incredible company. I love the culture, the mission, the people, the fabulous W/L balance and higher pay...there’s so much to love!
And while I’m grateful for the consulting experience, leaving was hands-down the best thing I ever did. Would never look back.
OP - first year partners at PwC likely make only $400k (if not a little less).... you could make that in 2 years after promotion at the big G.
Mck1 you must be referring to audit / tax partners, advisory in the right group will be 600-700k for first year partners
For people who are asking about level structures across tech companies, this is a good resource: www.levels.fyi . Pretty neat tool to compare levels across top tech companies.
Pretty sure 180+20+100=300
@C2: My director gets pissed when slides look too good because he assumes we wasted time that could have been spent improving a product
I also get a kick out of WOWing folks at G (people actually go “wow“ under their breath) with my b.e.autiful slides 😂
