Fishies, I need your help. I received an offer for $160k from guidehouse. I’m currently paid $133k at EY. I don’t particularly love my practice as it is testing and the new practice with guidehouse would be IT strategy. EY has gotten me comfortable with the reimbursement for fitness, phone and internet and the promises from Kelly Grier of “really good bonuses and raises” this year. What would you do?

I'm not sure why this is a consideration here. The raises and bonuses aren't going to make up for 27K difference in base salary. I imagine Guidehouse will also have benefits too, even though they may not be quite up to the same standard as EY. Of course, that also depends on what benefits are you actually using, because otherwise it doesn't matter. Example: amazing maternity leave benefit doesn't help you if you're not having kids anytime soon.

I can’t tell you what is best for you but I can tell you that my SO left Guidehouse as he has never been so unhappy with a company before. The benefits were very below average and he was saying many people hired at significantly higher than market value, but also expected to perform well above their abilities. The current staff is being paid at market and find resentment with the new hires coming in. The workforce there is full of very talented people and kind people but I think that their business model has a lot to be desired. Either way good luck

This is helpful. Thanks for sharing. How long did your SO stay at guidehouse before leaving? Where did he exit to?

Still hard to wrap my head around paying someone 160k as they address folks as fishies.

If you leave every year, that might be an issue, but otherwise, I think it's fairly normal for the industry. Plus the need is so high in general now, they'll overlook it

I would hop, it's a no-brainer

like

One of the reasons the pay is so high is because we desperately need people. Depending on what level you come in at, you likely won’t see much increase year to year starting out so high. Also, while our strategy teams try to do strategy, there is also a decent amount of A-123 and technologu testing, etc. and no way to know if they might move you to one of those roles.

My experience on raises at Guidehouse is much more than inflation and reflected my strong performance ratings. It was never 1% like some are saying. Bonuses for MCs is strong.

Benefits are on the slim side because we are PE-owned and they want cash liquidity. On the plus side, the comp is good.

We are intentionally poaching other Big 4 people to stand up our core competencies. We’re a little rough around the edges but the opportunity to get in early is good, I feel. And IT Strategy and tech consulting in general is a big play.

I agree that you prob won’t see as much pay rise once you’re in - until you’re promoted. AD is 160-190 I think, D is 210 upwards in T1 city.

like

@guidehouse2 - are you part of it strategy? How are you liking the work?

DM me if you want a detailed conversation. I think I have an idea of the position you are being recruited for. And from what I've heard and seen, your experience at GH varies by practice and leadership. So I'd take these blanket statements with a grain of salt.

Would also leave.

Is whatever you’re getting in perks more or less than the new salary?

If it’s substantially less, leave

An agency I freelance for wants to hire me full-time. They told me for a Sr Copywriter, 100-110k. I countered with 125-150.

I also said I'm interested in a higher-level title - I currently freelance as a Creative Director of Copy elsewhere (they don't have that title at this agency.)

They came back and said yes to the title and to 125, with a 6 month review that could raise it to 145.

Which is good for Sr Copy, but low for CD/ACD level. Don't want to screw myself over. What to say now?

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
