Proceed with extreme caution....
The “business advisory practices” can be very staff aug oriented. You might find yourself doing individual contributor staff aug assignments as a “consultant”. Practice leadership roles can be unexciting as their job is largely hiring and staffing consultants.
Find out what is driving the business in your local Slalom franchise. Every one is different...
No, not at all. I left Accenture as a SM, and I am doing SM work here. Still leading teams, still writing proposals and selling work, still driving solutions and strategies.
I’ve also seen vast inconsistencies in who is brought on as a “consultant” and who is brought on at “leadership” levels. Really made me scratch my head....
glad I left that place as it was driving me nuts trying to make sense of all the stupidity going on in my office
I did the move and it was a bit of adjustment for sure. Don’t think about the title and feel empowered to define and create your career path. I realized you definitely have to raise your hand and speak up more than big 5 to do the work you want to do.
If you’re still in the interview phase with Slalom and worried about this title, ask them what the next role will be. I’ve seen role levels vary across practices. For example, some go from Consultant to CSL while others go from Consultant to Consultant Manager to Practice Area Lead, then CSL.
It’s been a struggle trying to figure it out. Good luck
My 2c’s... Talk to some people who have been at Slalom for 2-3 years. Lack of career paths is a real issue there, as is compensation growth. If you are looking to “take it easy” and don’t care about progression go for it.
But just saying you aren’t going to find big firm types of opportunities. Deal sizes are smaller, teams are smaller, raises can be a joke, leadership quality can vary...
Since the model is hiring experienced “consultants” (in general) there are very limited “leadership” spots that seem to go to whoever is the most popular with the senior leadership team..
So don’t get me wrong... it’s a good place to work, but there are some trade-off’s you need to consider...
