For my kpmg tax associates. Beginner here.
Are your hrs budgets allowing for some wiggle room? Meaning if your budget is 10 hrs but you get the job done in 8 hrs are you able to still charge the rest of the time? Or are you being punished with more work for being efficient?

You charge eight if you work eight and you charge 12 if you work 12. Let the chips fall where they may and let your manager and partner deal with it.

If you think you are significantly going to exceed the budget that you’ve been told give your senior or manager a heads up as you approach that limit.

like

If you worked 8 hours and you report 10 hours then it’s against policy. Similarly, your manager shouldn’t force/coax you to underreport time. As you’ll learn, you do get punished for being efficient. You just need to learn how to use it in your advantage.

Just make sure its reasonable

like

Charge 8. You could have 2+ hours of corrections in the pipeline.

like

Make sure the time you charge is reasonable, if you think you work too fast, slow down a bit to review.

Unfortunately the industry measures your billable hours heavily. You will be analyzed on if you worked enough billable hours, so if you are efficient, that means you pick up another project to meet your targeted billable hours for the week/year. On the flip side, if you are efficient and provide good quality work, your supervisors will notice and provide positive feedback on your annual review. Your review rating typically impacts your annual bonus. It's a delicate balance and you'll figure it out as you go.

like

You do get punished for under billing.

like

You don’t get punished for being efficient but if your overall hours are less than the target utilization that can impact your comp. But this is all tracked and if you have availability you’ll get new work quickly.

like

If you work 8 and charge 10, then the firm makes the client pay for 10, it is illegal and borderline fraud.

Use the extra time for self review.

like

Time card fraud is criminal and there are laws about it. Feel free to do however you see fit with this information.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

How long does it take for PwC to send out rejection email? I interviewed with the team like a month ago, the recruiter called me the next day and told me that congrats, everyone likes me and told that they were working on my official offer. 3 weeks later, nothing. I followed up 3 times already and got the answer that I should expect to hear by the end of the week. My last follow up email, no response lol. Should I just move on now?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?
