For those that have been in consulting since graduating undergrad, and you’re 30+ and not manager or above. What happened?

I started my career with my company as an admin assistant and went back to undergrad when I was 28. Now I’m 33 and not a manager. Remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint.

Could I be salty that there are people 6 years younger than me in higher career levels thank I am? Sure, and I was. But focusing on what others are getting and not what they’re doing is what set me back in my career and how I valued myself.

They probably spent too much time minding their own business.

What’s with the negative connotation in this question OP? A million things could “have happened” or maybe there’s just more to life than climbing the corporate ladder as quickly as possible. Chill and mind your own business

like

Family things, job changes, moving, illness, a baby - this isn’t rocket science and I don’t believe that’s what OP was looking for

I graduated undergrad last year, started in consulting, and turned 30 this year 💀

I was in the military fwiw

^Same as this

Graduated undergrad at 22. Went to grad school and got 2 masters degrees (thought I wanted a phd until I didn’t). Started in consulting at 25. I’d be turning 30 as a senior 3 in January but I’m leaving consulting in less than 2 weeks for a manager role in industry. I guess I’m making manager before 30, right? 😅

For those that applied to MBB but work at KPMG- what happened?

funny

Went to grad school

I did other cool things in my 20s and then took a pretty big step back in responsibility to move into consulting at higher pay 🤷

Went to community college and took my time to transfer and took a lot of civic, community manager type of jobs. When I was finishing my tenure in uni, I got a job offer in the fall and graduated in the fall. I took a low effort job to have fun and enjoy my youth in the city.

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?
