For those that left management consulting for PE operations roles (portfolio ops group, operating partners, etc.), how satisfied are you with your decision? Why?

8/10 - missing two points because I do miss working with motivated/talented people.. most within the portcos are fairly average.. lack intensity and forward thinking. Also pretty much just working on simple ‘just do it’ style problems.

I think you’ve summed this up super well. I mostly miss having thought partners on what I’m working on at my own company. Ops is much less of a team sport.

Currently with value creation after McK. The role has its own struggles (stakeholder management etc) but I will / can never go back. Only thing I miss about McK is the PPT shortcuts. But I make like max 3 slides on average every week.

I'm entering my final year of law school but am going part time since I work full time as a paralegal. I have been a paralegal for more 10+ years and I want to open my own firm after I pass the bar.

I've worked at a lot of different size firms including a startup with a few attorneys and I was able to help with a lot of the ground work with getting the practice management system in place and still do some of that now at my current firm. Has anyone done this right out of law school? Any advice?

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

What does it mean if there’s a NEP at the firm who’s been there for a long time (20+ years), but never got promoted to EP? Never held leadership roles too. Does it usually mean EPs does not like the NEP enough to get promoted?

The NEP has a book of business, though no idea how much it brings in.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…
