For those with kids how transparent with them are you about your engineering career and all the headaches that can come with it from education to the work force?
When I share with little ones it seems that it’s very daunting to them but I am 100% for transparency if they ask any specific questions.

I try to be as transparent as possible with my kids, but I also make sure to frame it in a way that's not too overwhelming for them. I share the highs and lows of my career, but I also emphasize that it’s all part of the journey and that persistence pays off. It’s a balance between honesty and encouragement because I would love them to follow my career path.

Age-appropriate responses are the answers I give. I'm very honest about answering their questions and it's nice to have candid conversations with kids about what you might have done differently or what you really like about what you do. They pick up on so much and most of what we "say" is through body language. It's nice to have a conversation to add more context to what they may already understand.

I try to tell me kids some

I’m contracting with a company in an admin role, but sometimes I’m asked to do projects that would normally be outsourced to a marketing or design company like designing a flyer for example. It’s not in my job description, but I have the skills to do this work and so why not ask me to do it? Is it out of the question to ask if I can be paid for that work under a separate fee as a consultant or something? Is that even possible?

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?
