Friday is my last day at EY and I’m leaving as a newly promoted senior 1. I have nothing lined up as of now but I’ve been interviewing for senior accountant roles. I’m not really sure if that’s what I want to do. What else is out there that’s not accounting related? Anyone a data analyst, financial analyst, or anything else really that can give their insight and thought process?

Brooooo NOOOOO DO NOT DO THIS! No one is hiring AND if they know you don’t have a job you’re going to be lowballed SO HARD. I’m a former M&A analytics manager from the big4 - I made a great exit to big tech and got laid off in 8 months - when I started looking again NO ONE would come within 20% of what I was making. You have 0 leverage on the market right now as one of the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE. You are very dumb tell them you are sorry you’re just feeling burnt out - try and get a doctors note to back up that you’ve been psychologically unwell or something and grovel for your job back. God damn who advises you kids on how the world works?

M1, this is assuming that OP is leaving on their own will and also assuming that the situation they are is not much worse then not having a job or that they will not be financially stable if they left and can’t find a job soon.

OP, if you will struggle financially if you can’t find a job within 6-12 months, M1’s advise is great. If you are leaving willingly, the best case scenario is to find a job when you are still employed, tough it out if you can and prioritize finding a job while you are still employed. Best of luck!

As a counterpoint to the other posters here, I recently left EY as a senior (with CPA) and had no issue finding work. It took me only 2 weeks to go from applying to jobs to having an offer, and I turned down a bunch of interviews once I had an offer. Several recruiters told me the same thing, big 4 experience plus a CPA license is the gold standard and gets your resume to the top of the pile.

like

Yea the days of leaving big 4 for a pay raise are over. I took a pay cut but I’m now fully remote and never work past 5pm. It’s still a huge net positive for my quality of life to be out of public accounting.

like

OP I feel you. But I have a mortgage so I can’t quit.

funny

Maybe OP was laid off. They didn’t say if they were voluntarily or involuntarily leaving.

Said newly promo’d, those aren’t automatic especially nowadays - reading between the lines it sounds voluntary unless other details omitted

Are you in tax? I had 6 offers in the paat 4 weeks so tax seema to be hiring. All were at least what I am making now so market seems ok in tax.

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
