It’s 2 weeks, is there any need for them to go home for the weekend?
I was sent to KSA for a project kick-off and was expected to stay there for the month without flying home, sometimes it’s part of the jobs
Thousands of people are probably doing a similar trip to them so unless you say the company you should be fine.
It’s whether there are workable flights on Monday morning.
Either way I must say I wish I had more friends like you who were this passionate about work sending me to places for long periods of time.
I just hope it’s a nice place they are visiting.

It's perfectly normal especially given you'd likely miss half a day on either side with travel on Thursday and Monday. It's more effective to stay the weekend and spend that time team building / relaxing / working.
So unless you have a reason that you can't stay, and this is an occasional thing instead of 2 weeks every month, then it's normal.
I've been on projects where we were 3 full weeks on, 1 week remote, and each of those 3 weeks had a rotating shift schedule (4am-noon, noon-8pm, 8-4am). These were implementation go-live rollouts at various client sites all over the world, month after month.

Lol. Okay. Just keep whining then and don't complain when others are willing to grind and move up when you are not.
appreciate the replies guys/gals …tho i feel like i’m losing my mind a little reading some of these replies. when did it become normal to travel for 2 weeks at a time without a flight home on the weekend? (assuming you want to come back for the weekend and the flight is a short trip) when did it become standard to need a business case for going home on the weekend if you want to see your family / SO? where do we draw the line..?
Well your friend doesn’t work for him/herself, they work for the company who works on behalf of the client so the client sets the rules.
2 weeks is short, it’s unreasonable to expect the client to pay for an in between short trip home that only benefits the consultant and not the client, esp as the client prob has the expectation the consultant is working through part of the weekend.
Strong disagree with everyone in here staying this is normal. Not at all normal for a normal strategy consulting gig, unless there’s extenuating circumstances like international, long or difficult routes, etc. and it does not sound like this is at all a case. My expectation always (except for extreme cases or if it’s my choice) is that it’s a Mon morning flight out with a return Thurs evening. Cost of flight in my opinion not even relevant unless we are talking significantly more expensive for the flight (like, prohibitively expensive, not save a few hundred $).

2 weeks? cmon
OP you’re right - they should be paying for the flight home if your friend wants to go back. It’s under 2 hours and within the US - negligible cost to the firm. The people complaining about it in this thread probably expense more expensive dinners regularly than what this flight costs lol. Unless there’s some reason they need to be onsite Fri-Sun, they should be paying to go home.
thanks - that’s what i’m saying! i’ve been in consulting only 5 years but feeling VERY disillusioned by some of the replies on this thread…when did it become so crazy to stand up for yourself and draw some boundaries ?

I wonder what our veterans who served overseas think of this torturous requirement?

I’m a veteran who hates when civilians use veterans to prove a point.
While I agree that this isn’t ok, younger and single me wouldn’t have minded. And that includes when I had a SO but wasn’t married with a kid. Also, we’re absolutely moving away from it but the standard use to be you go out for 3 straight weeks in consulting without coming back in between so…
Also, if this is a once off ask vs doing 2 week stints at a time makes a big difference.
Friend should do the calcs and show it to the decision maker. If difference is reasonable then yea its unreasonable for them to deny it
Is this a work the weekend kind of thing, like a conference? Or an exotic/far/international destination? This is unusual, so there should be some more details or explanation, or maybe the firm will be willing to fly in a spouse/friend for the weekend.
Rising Star
Yes this is super unreasonable to not get to go home in this situation
Would be nice if the company paid but if it’s only two wks, I don’t think it’s unreasonable

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to make an employee stay the weekend if it’s cheaper to send them home. I think there might be some information missing here. But if it really is cheaper, the friend should make the cost comparison and present it to their manager who is making the directive.
Pro
Two weeks isn’t excessive for travel, so I think it’d be perfectly acceptable to have the employee stay the weekend if it is in fact less expensive and I’ve been that employee in the past who stayed the weekend. But if it isn’t cheaper to stay, that’s the business case to go home right there.
It’s only 2 weeks, relax. This is not a big deal
may be helpful to note the round trip flight would prob cost $400 at most…probably <$300 if i had to guess
Not normal and not ok given such a short distance
It depends.
If it helps, I traveled this week from Monday morning to Wednesday afternoon working until I HAD to go to the airport and still had work/messages waiting for me once I got home that evening (2 hr flight). I ended up passing out and waking up at like 12am to finish my tasks until about 3 am where I was starting to fall asleep again so called it a night. Just to wake up Thurs morning with more work to do and no motivation. It’s Friday, work for this week is more or less done now but I am EXHAUSTED. and feel completely unproductive. Would’ve killed to stay until Friday evening or Saturday morning so I have more time to relax.
