Be honest with your team and ask - maybe even in a private 1x1 setting. Tell them there is no wrong answer and gauge the average response. As for what is fun, depends on the event to be honest.
For me I prefer as little as possible. We have about 1 every 6 weeks and I’m still having team meetings and 1x1 on top of that.
I hate it but I have two toddlers and thus just don’t want to do anything extra with work than I have to. We have in person get togethers now and then and I can tell the younger people on the team enjoy them. They got to go see a city and have some good food and drinks. Me I’m trying to get the hell out of there and I feel guilty I’m making my wife juggle our kids alone to BS for a few days for “team building” when half these folks won’t be here in a year anyways. So I think the demographics of your team will be a big factor.
When I used to work remotely I hated those things. They're never fun and there's no way to make a zoom social event not awkward. Plus I'm probably going to have to make up that 1 hour of work later in the day, so you're basically wasting an hour of my free time.
Sales org here and we depend on each other so it’s imperative to feel comfortable with each other. We try to do one once a quarter or so. No longer than about 50 minutes. Fun things like a home scavenger hunt or truth truth lie where there is activity is necessary imo. Thinking back to early pandemic when remote happy hours were used more and they were lame. The interaction is necessary IMO. if your team doesn’t need it or isn’t a team related job, it probably isn’t as important. Our team culture is important to me so I want to foster a fun, inclusive culture even with remote people.
Thank you for this, I love the once a quarter cadence. I’ll definitely start there and see how it goes. I appreciate your response!
We do them quarterly. It’s mostly to get to know some of the people we don’t engage with on a regular basis. Trivia is fun. Don’t schedule it for after work hours or at the end of the day. I’m typically trying to finish my day and begin family time.
