Most of the world does not live to work like we do. They work to live. Their compensation is much lower, but they work significantly less too. A friend of mine works in the Amsterdam office after coming from the US and says that her work life balance is insanely better because she actually gets told to go home after working 40 hours. Things are more relaxed just about everywhere. Even just up in Canada. People live on those salaries and are probably happier too. Our priorities are just different so we focus immediately on the money.
I lived in London for 3 years making about £65k. Had a great life living in Fulham and traveling like I wanted. It was no big deal.
Why are you so angry?
Hey thanks for the condescending reply!
Are you like this in real life? When someone asks a question at work that you don't think they should ask, do you jump on them and call them names?
Oh shit, I completely missed the "Boston Consulting Group" label below both mine and OPs posts
More expensive than NYC, half the pay. Same stress level. Wtf?
Salaries in the rest of the world suck unfortunately.
Why was it condescending? People really live there with these salaries and it is not the problem you want it to be. Grow up. If you really wanted the experience you would go for it instead of finding excuses, f****** brat!
Guess what? People live there on these salaries. You just need to learn to live with less money.
F your attitude. "Most of the world" is not limited to Deloitte. Logical arguments are apparently also not a Deloitte thing.
U.K. Firm here. They definitely coast off reputation to justify low pay. Everyone I know has a "get promoted, work a year, leave" strategy simply for the CV boosting side of it.
Yup. Met some London analysts making about $50k
^ partially completely wrong.
Many European BCG offices work 20-30h more per week than the US offfices. Germany, Italy, France, Denmark...
Can't we all just get back to lamenting crappy salaries outside the US? Y'all are salty tonight
Ya UK salaries suck
U mad bro?
Consulting market in the UK is a very different industry; consulting is still not as widespread as it is in the US. It's v stratified between strategy and implementation, and informing management decisions isn't as wide a practice as it is here. Big4 also carry the baggage of being seen as 150-year pedigree accountancy firms. Also consulting is not as prestigious as it is in the US; if you graduate top decile in your class, you'll probably go to Goldmans or Magic Circle over McK.
That being said, the salary is perfectly livable - even in Central London. Hours/work-life balance are better too.
What a shame. I've always wanted to live in the UK. Couldn't afford to live there without being miserable on half the money.
*Not to say that management consulting doesn't exist in the UK; it obviously does. Just doesn't have the same pervasiveness/penetration in other sectors that it does here
