not my field of expertise obviously but I think the position you would be looking for is consulting engineering. I'm assuming you're in the states now, which is where I'm familiar. And if you're an immigrant I'm also assuming you don't have strong ties to a specific state or city so you'd rather work at a big company because a job with a big company sometimes creates an opportunity to relocate to another office in another city within the same company. in the event you need to change cities.
Structural engineering firms can be independent, and they can be coupled in with MEP engineering (which is what I'm versed in), but they work most closely with architects, therefore architecture firms frequently have structural engineers internally. Some big architects I know of where you can target are HKS, AECOM, HOK, Jacobs, and DLR. This is assuming you're interested in buildings design. If you're interested in bridges you're looking for transportation engineering, you can try Kiewit, Arcadis, Stantec, and some of the above also have a wing of transportation.
If you want to do your research and apply directly I think it increases your chances of being hired, it shows you know what you want and you chose the company. Or, you can use the myriad sleazy recruiters out there and they can hook you up with many opportunities.
