I’m a designer in the planning/landscape architecture dept. of a CE firm. Extremely frustrated that after 4+ years and multiple asks, I’m not getting the in-field construction experience I’ve asked for. I know that my designs could be better if I could see how things are actually built but I get slapped in the face with “I need you in the office designing/drafting” or “there’s no budget to have you go out” and then sends an intern to inspect instead. I’m 5 yrs out of college. Any advice?

Is it wrong that I’m just not into PE/VC? It seems to be the most desirable exit for most people that I work with. The work seems like it’s not a good fit for me but it feels crazy to pass up trying to get that amount of money when there really isn’t a realistic alternative to that amount of wealth (and I do want that amount of wealth).

I’ve been in my current position (Bookkeeper) for 4 years now. Hello everyone! My co-worker and I are preparing for the SHRM certification exam and Hoping to take it in December. I’m looking to purchase the SHRM learning system books from someone that has already taken the exam this year. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Does anyone feel that the Oil and Gas industry is the most discriminatory industry of all? They won’t even look at resume without O&G experience! It does not make sense to me as I would rather teach someone the specifics of an industry if they were a good fit. And for an industry that has so many obstacles from Government, Environmental Organizations and so on, why they are adding more bad publicity to themselves is not a great approach.

Just a bit of background, at my firm a Senior PM is someone with 8+ years exp. I have 10 years experience and on track to making Principal in a couple of months. How soon is too soon to start looking and applying to jobs after accepting a position?

Context:

I recently accepted a position at the company and have been working as a temp for the past 3 months. I really enjoy the people I work with and the company seems to really support its employees, however it is in a field that doesnt exactly align with what I would like to be doing. And unfortunately the compensation package is also lacking.

I’d to get a job in a small architecture firm or work for a developer to help build up my network. For the past 6 years I’ve taught high school architecture and engineering and done real estate on the side. I have an industrial design degree and tremendous construction and real estate sales knowledge. I also started architecture school but stupidly switched to industrial design. I don’t want to go back to school for architecture. Ultimately, I want to own my own company developing real estate.
