Yes. I had a great one at my previous WFH agency situation but it had nothing to do with trying to force it. Forcing awkward online gatherings has the opposite effect.
It happened organically over time as we joked around on Teams during the day-to-day assignments, stand-ups, etc.
You build a rapport exactly like what happens when you’re in person. Naturally.
Exactly this.
I think it’s not as necessary when you’re remote, people do the work, then do their thing with real life friends and family.
I built rapport just through slack and having channels on slack dedicated to talking about movies sports etc. Gatherings and friendship form that way, you can’t force it. Also it’s OK if someone wants to do their work and sign off and not be friends - attending happy hours and being friends shouldn’t even be a consideration of job performance

Forcing a “strong team culture” will never create one. A strong team culture can come from two places:
1) People who are happy where they work, because the working conditions are good and because people are not assholes.
2) People trauma bonding at a terrible workplace because they share the same miserable existence.
You don’t want the second one.
Create a work environment where people are free to be themselves, free from fear, toxicity, assholes, and where they are treated like adults and respected. People will do good work and they will create ties with coworkers they feel comfortable with on their own terms.
The virtual happy hours and occasional onsite gatherings haven’t done well in past and seem burdensome to some. I think it has more to do with how those are orchestrated more than the formats themselves, so I’m hoping to hear what factors have been instrumental in making real progress.
I work remotely and have great rapport with my coworkers. It’s literally all just about calling. Just get on the phone and talk through work instead of chatting. I know this is not a solution for everyone but it really worked for me to build those relationships.
Damn, I miss working from home full time.
Quality Meats is 100% remote
Worked on a remote team for 2 years that was really strong. Good rapport. Great creative. Would do anything for each other. One member was let go due to conflicts with upper level management. Team held together for a month and then one by one people left agency or asked to move to different accounts.
