Just made it to BCG, I start in a month
Don't think anyone ever has, nope.
I'm pre-MBA, coming in as an associate. Previously worked had a energy/utility focus (mostly financial side of project development). No shit, I cold emailed a BCG partner with a similar focus and was in the same programs during undergrad (not the same school). Got a couple of minutes on his schedule and he referred me a week later. The whole interview process was really interesting. I felt like my practice cases (with BCG folks and a friend with a JD/MBA) were much more challenging than the actual cases I got. I think the fit portion is weighed more heavily than people give to credit for. Also the way I actually talked/worked through cases (not necessarily the insights themselves) is what got me points. Again, went through 4 cases and definitely encountered my most challenging cases during practice.
MBA. Yes.
Tons via mba
Can you explain? In other words, someone at a big four gets their MBA and then applies to an MBB firm?
Yes. Through on-campus recruiting.
I know atleast couple who made it to BCG..
Welcome BA1!
Fantastic. All the very best for the journey ahead.
Nice to know this works Booz Allen.
Welcome to the family!
TC1, honestly I heavily relied on my friend who is recently out of Yale's MBA. He had interviewed at MBB and knew all the particulars. For instance, BCG really likes interviewee led cases, but doesn't really require/expect it from the Associate level. Without my friend, it would have been really hard to learn that casing style let alone excellent at it. So I would reach out the recruiting to see if you can practice with folks at the firm and have more informal conversation about the interview process/what folks are really looking for (I split my calls with BCG folks about 50/50 like that). Additionally reach out to your network to find people who work at M or at least interviewed to have a more consistent "sparing partner" I did about 15 live cases over 2 months during my interview process. Also thanks!!
TC1 - I did the majority of my practice during cases but I would recommend googling consulting case study math problems. Doing a bunch of those can get you up to speed really quickly. That said, during a case I think walking the interviewer through the logic of your math before you actually do it helps you make fewer mistakes but also cuts you some slack if you do make a calculation error.
We have a few former Deloitters
Meant to add "If so, what was the process like? Is it a common occurrence? What do they look for in a candidate or a candidate's experience that the big four don't?"
@kpmg basically..it's pretty straightforward. Almost every single ex big4 applicant for mbb got first round interviews at my m7 school (with some exceptions, some people have serious personality issues). Even saw a good handful of first time big4 internship conversions to mbb - deloitte summers with no prior consulting experience otherwise to McKinsey.
BA1, what's your practice or focus?, if we may know
Also BA1, are you post-MBA.
As a fellow BAH, I'd like to hear more about your experience. I'm planning on pursuing an MBA.
