Ask your doctor. I don’t want to say it’s impossible bc there’s always an outlier, but the stress your system will be under by either a marathon or pregnancy alone is intense. Together? Unimaginable (to me). It also depends on how complicated your pregnancy is. If you can’t do the race this year, maybe defer for a year?
Talk to your doctor. But If you are running now, frequently, and have done marathons in the past, continue to train as such, from what I understand, you most likely could. It’s all about level of exercise pre pregnancy and continuing and modifying as the pregnancy continues (like no ad workouts, no twisting is yoga, no flat back exercises after a certain point, type modifications).
Thank you all! I ran the NYC marathon in 2019 and was well into training for another (20 miles) in 2020 before covid hit. I also ran a trail marathon in 2016 so I’m thinking I should be okay, and will just plan to run this to finish and not for time.
Congrats!!
I don’t think it’s impossible, but I also don’t think it’s likely unless you’re a very, very seasoned runner. I’m just starting my 2nd trimester and have felt like hot garbage most of the last 2 months. I can’t imagine being pregnant and doing an intense training regimen, personally.
Many of the exercise guidelines for pregnancy are extremely outdated. Some physicians are “old school” as well. My doctor never discouraged me from running, because it was a part of my regular exercise program (nothing new). You have to give yourself permission to listen to your body more intently. You may need to adjust how you run, slow down, take way more breaks, and drink way more fluids to prevent dehydration or overheating. You may have to pay special attention to balance and postural training as pregnancy can change things quickly. You may want to find a good Physical Therapist or athletic trainer who is knowledgeable about pregnant athletes. Google other women who have done this. I remember reading blogs and learning a lot from others when I ran well into 38 weeks. I didn’t do a marathon personally, but if you’ve been running at this level all along, you might be able to do this.
Honestly, running at all during pregnancy is pretty amazing and empowering.
