Realization: I'm good at my job because I'm single
If you are thinking of starting a law practice or growing one with little or no capital, you need to get the book, “Starting & Growing a Law Practice without Breaking the Bank.
It was written based on personal experience and research. I started my practice 11 years ago in the middle of the 2008/2009 recession with about $500 and I have grown the practice significantly over the years using affordable and available resources.
I also coach solo practitioners and small firm attorneys. https://www.amazon.com/Starting-Growing-Practice-Without-Breaking/dp/1099523303

I was able to get a 20% raise without another job offer. I was just honest enough to say I was being underpaid and showed proof of my worth at the company. Might not work for everyone but that's the approach I took. You need to have leverage you're prepared to present that details what you've done and why you deserve the raise.
The company I’m at isn’t terribly stingy with raises, they don’t just hand them at like crazy, but it also isn’t too crazy of an ask. So when I negotiated mine, and this was a year ago, I highlighted everything I had been doing over the year, all the areas I had improved and brought more value to. Look at it as making the case of why they should fork over more of their money to you.
If you want to do it, make sure you can make a good case for yourself. Ideally, keep notes over time and jot down things you've done well. And when it's time to make a case for yourself you can argue that you've done great work and you've been an asset to the company. It's not enough to ask for the money, you have to really sell it and make a case for yourself.
