Nope. Take the promotion and leverage the new role to manage those responsibilities differently. For example, can the more senior title allow you to have more senior staff on your team that therefore helps you make more time in your personal life? Are you able to better manage your time at the new level?
good advice here. Take the promotion and figure out a way to make it work for your work life balance. If you don't take the promotion, be prepared to move on to another company. I passed up a promotion once. I was not happy at the agency and knew I wasn't there for the long term. The agency was toxic and I just wasn't engaged enough to do what was needed to be successful in the new role. Once you pass up a promotion, leadership will look to others and you will not be as supported.
At my firm, pay bands overlap from level to level. A high performing L4 can make more than a marginal L5. Bonuses for high performers are considerably higher as well. Performance ratings are based on level and the group in that level. A promotion puts you in a different peer group, so if you aren’t all in for that promotion, it might be best to stay in the current level.
Take the promotion and delegate more. I would make it part of the deal that you are taking on more responsibilities but need additional team members to support you. Men don’t refuse promotions, and if they can’t do the work, they just say they are not supported in a way where they can deliver everything. ☺️
I think it depends. For example, if the role today allows you to work remote most of the time and the new role requires you to be on the road, then I agree you should pass if that doesn’t fit your lifestyle. But, if this is about more responsibility, I agree you can just delegate more, draw the line and keep your balance. Maybe not immediately but you can find your groove.
FWIW I’ve felt like every promotion I’ve gotten has come with less work and more flexibility/control over my life and schedule.
