I grew up in a nuclear family away from extended relatives who were never really close. Parents were either emotionally unavailable or distant. I find myself questioning basic politeness I’ve learned since a child. Wondering what everyone else thinks. I work with an associate. She’s great. When she does good work or something I’ve asked her to do, I, of course, say “thank you!” I don’t really expect a response. She always replies “you’re welcome!” Or some variation. And for some reason, that’s awkward. Is it just me? I know in normal manners, that is the right response. Why does it sit funny?
