Hello, I have an offer from Capgemini Invent in Chicago. What should I expect in terms of salary/year? Would that be enough to live comfortably? I live in Europe with w a wife but no kids, never lived in the US.

Also, I heard US consultants travel every week, is is also the case in Chicago? We don't travel that much in Europe..thanks for helping out!

I wouldn’t quit your old job until you have your visa/work permit. They are very hard to get right now. I’d also try and have your wife some at the same flight and with you. Welcome to Chicago.

I don’t think business travel will be a regular thing for consultants in the US for a long time. How many YOE? Chicago is more affordable than other large US cities, but they’re having you move to another country, so I would expect a pretty decent offer

like

You say you have an offer, but you asked here what salary to expect. Did Capgemini not tell you?

I expect it will be enough to live on, as at the manager level, pay would be noticeably above $100k/yr, and cost of living in Chicago is much lower than in many cities (New York, London, Paris).

The work visa situation is very uncertain. Don't make any big decisions (like buying/selling a home/car) until you know more about the visa.

Chicago consultants do travel each week under normal circumstances. Covid has stopped business travel for the near future, but once the pandemic subsides, you are likely to fly every week. Ask capgemini what their travel model is. Some companies do not have as much travel as others.

like

My understanding about CapGemini is that they provide more IT managed services than consulting services. You need to check with them what’s the travel situation is. Not all consultants in all companies travel.

Salary depends a lot about yoe, skill, city. We don’t know what your skills, YOE are, so there is no way we can provide any answer.

By the way, you may be aware that Trump banned entry of business travelers until end of the year. Please check if you fall into that category.

Saw my therapist this past Friday and he gave me a useful trick to build better behavior patterns. Whenever you have work to do but would rather nap or something, tell yourself 3 negative effects of the nap and 3 positive effects of doing the work. You might still take the nap, but if you can get in the habit of thinking of it negatively, you'll take less naps when you need to be doing other things.

Doesn't matter what the activities are. Could be working out vs eating more, could be socializing IRL vs wasting time in FB (lol)
