I would put an emphasis on your networking skills. If you can I'd name drop some attorneys/firms that you have e a strong relationship with them can be leveraged for future students. Talk about how you are planning on selling the school/it's students and any plans for future activities.
There are some great thoughts here on the substance. One thing I’d add (having been a Director at a law school for 9 years) is that they’re likely wanting someone who will stay for a while. So, make it clear that you’re not just applying because you had a bad day at the office; that this is a long-term career move you’re committed to. I also think I got some points when I applied for understanding that there’s a lot of getting your hands dirty (literally - I had to serve lunch on multiple occasions 😂) and that you can’t be too precious about being overqualified for certain tasks. Even though it’s a JD-required position, it’s still administrative.
Review the job posting closely and think of anecdotes explaining how you embody those qualifications/skills, analogizing as needed if there isn't a 1:1 correlation. Have a great answer ready for why you want the position.
I’m guessing this position is basically career services where you help students find internships or jobs? For a brief period of time I worked under the assistant dean for student affairs at a law school. During that interview, they gave me a “hypothetical” situation concerning a student and asked how I would respond to it (turned out the situation really happened). I could see something similar happening in this interview. Student X comes in asking about clerkships. How do you help them? Where do you point them, what advice do you give? That kind of thing. So be ready to answer stuff like that about clerkships, big law, government, DA’s office, PD’s office, that kind of thing. If I’m correct that this is career services, you’re going to need to be skilled at handling students and outside attorneys, firms, judges, etc., so anything you can do to show that you’re able to connect with all of these people at varying levels would probably help. Good luck!
I was once asked for an unofficial recommendation from an employer who was interviewing a person for this type of position. The focus of questions for me from the future employer was really on how well the person was connected (i.e. The hidden language there is …”Can the interviewee get the students jobs?” This helps the school’s rankings.)
Best luck!
