Be ready to hire a labor law attorney, sounds like you may have a case of retaliation.
My boss (27 white cis male) was excluding me from all meetings and decision making on the account I was assigned to, never gave me challenging work and mostly assigned me busy admin tasks, started complaining about me before we even worked together, never showed any appreciation for anything I did, only gave positive feedback when he wanted to give more negative feedback, and was honestly just a condescending prick.
I expressed to a senior manager how his leadership “skills” were limiting my ability to do my job without calling him sexist or anything. After he spoke with my boss, my boss turned around and gave me a crap review with nothing factual on it. A few months go by, I felt like we made progress (he even said so himself) but then he threw me under the bus to management saying “I don’t have time to improve your work ethic”. I asked for him to explain and I was told it’s because I didn’t hit my Q4 goals (even though I did but no one checked). And now I’m on a PIP and about to get fired :)
There’s also 15 men and only 4 women at this company. All senior management is male and there is clear favoritism and special treatment for the boys (even the ones in my role). I’m also the longest tenured women at my company since all the other women quit (literally 1/3 of the company)
It is possible that your boss has poor leadership skills and you are also bad at your job. In which case this is a recipe for disaster that will come to an end, likely at your expense. The culture doesn't sound like its a good fit...is there a reason you'd want to stick around? Or have you already started looking?
Wow, it sounds like you are a rock star. If you do decide to leave, you can take comfort knowing that they'll likely suffer without you. And another possibility is they'll lose clients if your clients decide to follow you. The fact that they gave you a PIP despite your performance means they don't know what they're doing and might not have the longevity for a career there anyways...it might be better to leave now than leave once they go out of business.
Is HR involved? Can you escalate? Or maybe just take the money (if they are offering exit package) and look for a better job with more inclusive environment?
Their is no hr since it’s a startup :/ that probably should have been red flag number 1
Please share this in the PIP bowl
