Help me Decide: Am Senior PM at a bottom tier, PE-owned niche tech firm on the west coast. Low-effort work environment due to lax leadership and low maturity in PM discipline. Day to day is pretty mellow and I like my coworkers a lot. Making decent $$$ but just got an offer for same title at dev shop that’s about a 15% salary bump, but the org sounds pretty crappy, W/L balance def will be worse. No other incentives aside from base salary. Recently bombed a 2nd round PM interview with a FAANG.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. I’m trying to pivot to PM after >3 years in finance and I have a 2nd round interview with CPO this week. Company has 3.7 on Glassdoor with complaints about CEO, “bro-y” culture, and hard to wfh. It’s a data analytics company with 5 PMs, was bought by a PE firm this year, and has a new (female) CEO as of Oct. Role is 50/50 hybrid, pays well vs what I make, and most importantly would be a foot in the door to PM. Is this a good place to be for PM? What else do I need to find out to know for sure?

As a first time PM at a company with no PM structure, I’m finding it difficult to learn good practices and bring myself to “the next level”. Has anyone here had a similar self taught start that made the break through to become a solid senior PM? Anything will help, books, etc.
