Hey there!
I am a Masters Student majoring in Machine Learning. I am in my first semester and I am kind leaning to explore Data Science as well. Could any Professional Data Scientists help me out on getting started? What skills do I focus on? What kind of projects should I have on my portfolio?
I have tried looking this info out in the internet but its all overwhelming. Hoping to get some honest guidance here!

Might need to find an internship first. Have you applied anywhere?
I don’t have any consulting related internships. Since I’m no longer in school, can I still apply to internships at consulting firms?
Someone already said what I was thinking. Where are your internship experiences? You definitely want to have those on your resume. From what I’ve heard, it’s best to have at least two point under each experience, but anyone can feel free to correct me.

I am also a NESCAC alum who majored in Econ. This is my major issue with NESCAC schools: they do a horrible job of telling you what you need to do to secure employment after graduation. I have so many peers who had way better grades than me that still don’t have a full time job because these schools are so entrenched in academia that they do the bare minimum to prepare you for the corporate world. I’ve since gone to a business school (not a notable one at that, but I loved it) for my MS and was shocked how much better this school was at informing students about the job market and how to get a job compared to my “elite” undergrad.
Anyways, you have WAY better grades than I had. You’re clearly a very smart and accomplished academic. I think what’s holding you back, as others have noticed, is your lack of internships. Trinity has some very successful alumni, and I suggest you reach out to them either to find an internship or to get a referral for the firms you mentioned. However, it will be more difficult to get a full time job offer without any internship experience. Doesn’t hurt to try though. But leverage the Trin alumni network for sure. I would also put the BU Med thing first. I know people say not to do it out of order, but I would disregard that in this instance. I would also revise the RA part and make it sound less like a boot-camp.
Maybe reach out to your Econ profs and see if they have any good connections for you. You’re smart enough to get a FED internship if they take graduates, and that could take you really far. Just an idea.
Thank you for your advice! I’m not sure if the FED internships take graduates. Do you know of any other places who might take a new grad for an internship? Thank you!
