Use the American definition of family - which is immediate family (parents and siblings), when answering the question.
And i’m assuming this because even after having a conversation with this recruiter, he sent me the exact same LinkedIn in message a few months later.
Anyway, during the call, John asked me if I had any family working there. To which I responded I have a distant relative, and that was the last I heard from him.
So my questions are:
1) is there really a role Sam is looking to fill and should I connect with him to learn more about the roles he had in mind (despite not actually sharing any specific job descriptions), or did Sam also reach out for the sole purpose of meeting some kind of outreach quota? Sam’s message seems very similarly worded to John’s but the only difference is that he did follow up when I didn’t respond to his initial message. I’m so sick of these mind games in a job market where it feels almost impossible to find/land anything and I don’t want to get my hopes up again if it’s not a legit opportunity
2) What is the correct way to answer the “do you have any family working with us” question? What is the purpose behind asking this question, especially in an introductory call? The only reason I can think that this question is asked is to avoid any potential conflict of interest, so why does it matter whether or not I have relatives working there?
PwC was sued for age discrimination for just recruiting young people on college campuses and settled. So now you see tons of linked in ads all over the country. I suspect this is what is going on in your case as all the firms are reacting preventively.
I don't know if the recruiters were trying to juice their numbers to hit a quota, but I wouldn't rule it out. I've heard so many odd stories about recruiters in the past few years that I'd believe almost anything. There always does seem to be some deeper game being played, and people they approach are just treated as pawns in whatever odd scenario is playing out.
