Hi all - recently laid off junior in big law here due to "performance reviews". I'm looking for big law firms that are actually committed to supporting their junior attorneys of color. If anyone can send advice as to which firms are committed to diversity, I'd really appreciate it!

If you can avoid it, do not go to a firm that either doesn’t have pay transparency (often referred to as black box -GT is a big example) or has a weird off-market pay scale (RS is a big example).

As far as I know, there are no firms truly committed to supporting their attorneys of color, but you occasionally find a group or partner that will look out for you.

It’s more important to know what you’re getting into so you can set yourself up for success. Cast a wide net so you aren’t unemployed for too long and come back when you have offers to ask about experiences with the particular firms whose offers you are considering.

I’ve experienced this and support A9 100%. If you have a choice between black box and lockstep, choose lockstep all day long. It is that much more easy to get screwed over at a black box firm, where everything is discretionary. An abundance of discretion rarely favors us, unless you know right off the bat that you’ll have strong sponsors at that firm. The less discretion in things like hours, pay, promotion etc, the better for you.
Disregard my title - I’m a Partner in Biglaw and I speak from experience when I say that unless you’re an extra superstar ( read - have no life and work super hard on your visibility) or you enjoy strong sponsorship, you will feel the effects of bias in comp and opportunities if you go black box. If you don’t have other options, that’s a different matter - a bird in hand…

Gibson Dunn is good by Biglaw standards.

I wouldn’t look at this in terms of which firms are committed to diversity, but investigate the specific groups you’re interested in at those firms and whether you’ll get the support you need.

like

Your credentials will matter. If you went to BU/BC, and didn’t graduate near the top of your class, some of the firms mentioned here won’t look at you (e.g., Gibson Dunn).

You have to be realistic about your options. Miami is going to be very hard. You need to apply broadly at this point. It’s good to try to find a firm that is committed to supporting their junior attorneys of color, but you should focus more on finding a job ASAP.

You keep telling yourself that.

Okay so I’m a newly licensed attorney in a very conservative part of TX. I just got my first job offer and I was worried at first thinking that I was in “Trump” territory, but I tested the waters in my interview and spoke about police injustices and how prosecutor’s job is not only to protect victims, but also defendants from police injustices. I have to let them know by tomorrow, but thoughts on if this is a good career move for someone who wants to work in transactional work-RE or Bankruptcy?

I’m not sure what I’m looking for in this post, but I feel I just need to get stuff off my chest. I’m a new attorney, my first job is as an ADA in a large county in a rural comm. It’s only my 1st month in the position and I’m having trouble feeling as though people are complacent and often times careless with peoples lives. I’m the only Latin/POC ADA and 80% of our defendants are Latino when they make only 25% of the county pop. We have LOTS of discretion to offer pleas, but honestly I’m not

A separate attorney was hired to handle that part before I was hired to handle all other matters, including settling a $500,000 debt with the...

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
