If you’re only bringing carryon bags and have checked in online, you typically can go straight to the security line and use your boarding pass on your phone. If you need to check a bag, you will need to make sure you get there NO LATER THAN an hour before your flight boards. …Even if you check in online, if you have a checked bag they will not let you check the bag if you hit 59 mins before.
If you’re flying around the holidays AND internationally AND with kids, definitely get there 2.5-3 hours ahead. MCO airport lines are ridiculously long during the holidays. Like excruciatingly long, so be prepared. It’s pretty efficient and the line moves, but still long around the holidays (of course if you have TSA pre check or any of those other ‘skip the line’ programs, you can adjust timing for that).
But if you don’t have TSA pre check etc, and if your flight is early enough (like before 7am) you can actually sign up for a pre scheduled spot at MCO.whyline.com where you can skip the line for free. If you’re able to do this, make sure you ask near security what line you should stand in, as it’s not super clear.
If you’re traveling with young kids and you end up getting through security and have 1.5+ hours to kill, consider checking out the airport lounge (about $35 per person, or free with specific credit cards). You will get food, wine and liquor, and comfortable seating and they have kids play areas so you can watch them from afar.
If your kids are young enough, your airline will typically allow families with kids to board first. So be sure you’re at the gate before the boarding time (boarding time is about 30 mins before the time the flight actually takes off).
Bring books and activities and snacks for the kids (again, assuming they are young). There are loads of cute instagram videos of homemade activity and snack packs to keep the kids occupied. But MCO to Cancun isn’t too long of a flight.
When you get to Cancun, there will loads of salesmen/women trying to get your attention for rental cars and activities, so try not to get overwhelmed and politely walk straight past to get outside (unless you actually want to sign up for activities/rentals).
If you’re staying in a resort, you should be able to book an airport transfer shuttle. If your resort doesn’t offer one or if you are staying somewhere else, you can book a shuttle for about $30 through Nexustours.com. You’ll see a representative outside the airport and they will have your name on a list. Be sure to book a shuttle for on the way back, too. And bring some dollars to tip your servers if you’re going to be in a resort.
Hope this helps and have loads of fun!
In most tourist areas/resorts it’s acceptable to tip in either, however pesos will be easier for the hotel employees as they won’t have to take the extra step to exchange it. …But most Americans tip in US dollars anyway so they are used to exchanging their tips.
