Hi, as a fed, do you work outside of 9-5? I heard some criminal prosecutors work overtime when short handed.
Thanks!

Federal agency attorney:
50% of the year is 40 hour weeks with 35-40 hours or work
25% is 40-50 hour weeks
25% is 80-100+ hour weeks

Depends on staffing levels, whether there is a crisis or resource heavy adjudication, political attention, etc.

I know in other agencies it is a pretty steady 40 hour job

like

Yes, and not just when short handed. Trial is another beast, but even regular weeks for me are not 9-5.

like

Yes on the civil side

Also yes as a non-DOJ civil litigator. Much better hours but definitely work longer hours before trials, etc.

What is the overtime compensation like for those extra hours? Do you always claim it?

In most federal offices you get comp time which is a 1:1 conversion of the hours into additional leave.
