Hi energy fish, I’m currently in the process of breaking into the energy industry. My education is in energy engineering but I got sidetracked. Now, what is better as a pivot point for later exits and continued career path in energy: A) joining Guidehouse in the energy team or B) joining a T2 in the energy team or C) joining MBB as a generalist but network my way into energy work? TIA ❤️

Late reply, but in my experience I’d strongly recommend taking a T2 or MBB track. Guidehouse’s brand in energy is nothing compared to Navigant’s and the internal environment is chaotic due to extremely high turnover. Further, the vast majority of work is in the utility and government programs space (vs. strategy, corporate procurement, etc.), so if that’s not your cup of tea it may not be a fit. The exits are definitely nice, but I imagine you can find similar or better exit options in energy through paths B or C.

Happy to talk more, but best of luck on whatever path you choose!

Happy to chat, I have represented professionals from all mentioned businesses.
Could Evan throw in a few other potential businesses to consider

If you are passionate about energy, you should join Guidehouse. You’ll be put on projects that are very relevant and innovative and still work with big clients. You don’t know how long youd have to network your way at MBB. I think the learning is unmatched and there are great people.

Can anyone let me know how easy it is to apply to a consulting firm in Dubai directly coming from London? I am currently working at a T2 strategy firm in London and my partner and I want to relocate in ~1.5 years. My firm does not have an office in Dubai whilst my partners firm does. Is it possible to apply straight (rather than moving laterally in London, waiting a few years then transferring?) interested in MBB views too. (I would have roughly 2.5 YOE by then)

Having worked with energy now for a decade, I find myself enjoying the craziness of it all: You're always two decisions (in Moscow or Riyadh) away from prices halving or doubling. War or no war is quite often a sensitivity, and adoption of EVs/renewables/biofuels will be between X and 10X. Find it hard to imagine doing strategy work in the less volatile/crazy domains - what could be more exciting than this 😋
