Main thing would be to get corporate tax and tax provision experience, if you want to go to a large corporate role
Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. How important would you say tax provision experience is compared to corporate compliance when applying for industry tax roles?
If you are doing corporate tax work, I would think it would be helpful for a future corporate tax position
Thanks! That’s reassuring to hear. My role will primarily involve pass-through entities (1065, and 1120-S), but I’m hoping to gain exposure to C corporation work over time as well.
Transitioning from a Mid size firm to Corporate industry tax role is easier than transitioning to Big4 tax role. Make sure you put every effort to get your cpa exams completed during your time at mid size firm that will give you more opportunity and flexibility to choose from
It depends on how you will feel in your current role after 2-3 years and is that still something you would like to continue or transition to industry roles. In my opinion spending 5 years in Public accounting is the ideal number before transitioning to industry roles. The longer you stay the more it becomes difficult to find ideal roles within industry. For instance, it’s easier to find senior to newly appointed manager level roles within industry after you spend 4-5 years in public but as you hit 6-7 you are more qualified to take experienced manager roles within industry and at that Point it would be more challenging to you to prove that you are experienced enough to take up industry manager roles
