Hi everyone. I'm a current college freshman with eyes set on becoming a lawyer. I'm looking for any advice whatsoever. I have a 4.0 gpa, and I am already making great progress on the lsat. I decided to start studying early in order to get a score as close to 180 as possible. I believe I took a smart route by starting off at a community college and going the transfer route. I'll graduate with my BA completely debt free with money in the bank! Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

Being an attorney is wildly fun. Either that or maybe I’m growing numb.

I think you should look into the attorney billable hour system before you decide on being a lawyer. You work on a timer and need to be super efficient. You take guilty vacations that you have to make up for. Is this the life you want? Most firms require billable hours unless you do Plaintiff litigation.

Take a gap year or two and work as a paralegal at a law firm. It’ll tell you if you really want to be a lawyer. Plus, you’ll build some of the skills that will help you be a better law student.

Have you done all your research and decided WHY you’re going to become a lawyer? The game isn’t for everyone. Before investing your time and energy, and you’ll need to dedicate a lot of both, make sure it’s worth it to you. Work for an attorney, meet with multiple attorneys to understand the day to day, and get as many perspectives as you can.

Keep your GPA as high as you can, and I recommend taking an LSAT course if you can (Testmasters is what my friends recommended and I took — I was able to raise my score from a 160 to a 175).

Other than that — take classes that interest you, and pursue interests and hobbies you care about (they don’t have to be law-related). If there’s a student group or volunteer opportunity that interests you, you could consider working towards a leadership position. I was also recommended the book How to Get Into Top Law Schools by Montauk, which recommends having at least 2 things to talk about & sell yourself with. Pursuing those kinds of interests is good for your apps, but also just good for your development as a person. Stay open and do what excites you.

Down the line, you’ll need to think about letters of recommendation too — ideally you’ll want a couple professors that know you well. Going to office hours or being an RA can help.

Go to a T14 but try to get a scholarship (and pick bigger scholarship over ranking within T14 because they will all open most of the same doors).

I'm entering my final year of law school but am going part time since I work full time as a paralegal. I have been a paralegal for more 10+ years and I want to open my own firm after I pass the bar.

I've worked at a lot of different size firms including a startup with a few attorneys and I was able to help with a lot of the ground work with getting the practice management system in place and still do some of that now at my current firm. Has anyone done this right out of law school? Any advice?

3L with mostly A’s and B’s. I am having the worst luck trying to find work for after school and my experience working with lawyers has left me completely dejected. I cannot get an interview to save my life. I was so excited to get an externship summer after 2L with a small business and IP firm only to get yelled at on the phone a few times for not doing an assignment correctly. Mind you, I was working FOR FREE as it was a school connected externship. That made me never want to work in the law.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow.
